This seems like a dismal time to IPO an independent head manufacturer, unless they feel the market will rebound strongly in the coming months as it has often done in the past. So, are they smart, or desperate?

If they were smart, wouldn't they be Headway.com?

Regards,

Mark

"Johnson Matthey believes that the hard disk industry will need to use advanced material technology for a rising proportion of its output. Currently, platinum is used as part of a co-based alloy or layer in the manufacture of the rotating disk in a hard disk drive. Johnson Matthey estimated that within two or three years, all hard disks will contain platinum in their magnetic layers.... At the moment, only half of hard disks contain a layer of which platinum is a part. ... 'We expect annual use of platinum in hard disks to rise from around 250 000 ounces in 1998 to in excess of 500 000 ounces within the next four years,' the marketing company [JM] says."

Headway has been suppling Seagate MR heads for the Cheetah and Barracuda drives and is a potential supplier of GMR, but I don't think any volume has occurred yet.

I believe the motor you're referring to is the fluid bearing motor which is in several products now.
