Potassium permanganate has myriad uses. It's not so good for explosives but it makes really dandy incendiaries. It also dissolves in water with the most gorgeous intense purple color. That's the ticket - he likes pretty colors.

Encourage him to study chemistry on the web. Show him the porno sites that you have joined (save separate fees) and forbid him from using them.

Funny, but true. Nicholas, age 11, is much the same way. He wanted us to get him a copy of the Anarchist's Cookbook. I cruised the net, and found commentary that the recipes for explosives were incomplete and unreliable, and that anyone who followed them would be more likely to blow himself up than anyone else, so I told him that. He lost interest, but still asks his father (chemical engineer) about formulae for explosives on a regular basis.

Now he is researching how to build his own computer. He's always been interested in technology, like building model rockets, and Erector sets, and new building sets that have motors and other gadgets, like Capsella, and electronic kits from Radio Shack and stuff from Edmund Scientific, and so forth. And things that go boom really fascinate him.

I don't think it's dangerous. I think boys are just like that. Some girls, too, of course.
