Czech-based car maker Skoda Automobilova, a subsidiary of the Germany-based Volkswagen group, has decided to set up a 100 per cent subsidiary in India and sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the directorate general of foreign trade (DGFT) to introduce its models in the Indian market.

The company's first offering in India has been picked as its Octavia model which has been scheduled for launch next year. A decision on whether to launch its Felicia model will be taken at a later date.

Octavia will be positioned in the top-end premium bracket of the mid-size luxury car segment to compete against the likes of Mitsubishi Lancer, Honda City, Opel Astra, Daewoo Nexia and Fiat Sienna.

A green-field manufacturing facility is being planned by Skoda to manufacture its vehicles in India.

According to sources in the company, a Skoda team from Germany led by Imran Hassen, director of the Indian operations, was in India to meet the director general of foreign trade earlier this week.....
