Sam, Sony learned a lot since the Betamax, which failed mainly because VHS could store more. By the time they were ready to try the CD, they decided on 5-1/4 inches because that was enough to hold the entire Beethoven 9th Symphony - a wise decision, though the reasoning may have been odd. If the Memory Stick is able to store as much info as CF, with as good read/write times, I don't see any reason why it won't succeed (with SanDisk, of course, getting some royalties or providing some components). However, until now there is no indication that the Memory Stick is capable of holding as much as CF. In that sense, CF would be analogous to VHS, simply because of its greater capacity. I also agree with the WSJ article that consumers can deal with more than one standard - just look at the current competition between CDMA and GSM in digital cellular phones.
