HORSHAM, Pa. (September 2 , 1999) - General Instrument Corporation (NYSE: GIC) today announced that Excite@Home has approved GI's SURFboard(R) SB3100 high-speed cable modem for cable data networking services. This approval makes GI the first provider to receive Level 2 status for a DOCSIS 1.1 hardware-ready modem. It also marks the second Level 2 approval of a SURFboard cable modem, with GI's SB2100 first-generation RF-return modem having obtained Level 2 status in March 1999.

The Excite@Home Level 2 approvals confirm that GI's SURFboard modems are interoperable with DOCSIS-based cable modem termination system (CMTS) and operation support systems (OSS) equipment. In addition, the approvals demonstrate GI's implementation of key data networking and network management features and validates the quality of the SURFboard modems.

GI will provide its SURFboard SB2100 and SB3100 cable modems to Excite@Home affiliate systems. GI's cable modems provide Internet access at speeds up to 50 times faster than a traditional 56K modem. These modems allow the consumer to take advantage of the Excite@Home content and uniquely high-speed data transport provided by cable networks.

"We are pleased to provide the industry's first Level 2-approved DOCSIS 1.1 hardware-ready modem...the SURFboard SB3100. Excite@Home's Level 2 approval of both the SB2100 and SB3100 continue GI's tradition of industry leadership while also acknowledging SURFboard's proven reliability and performance," said John Burke, Vice President-Marketing of GI's Advanced Network & Telecom Systems (ANS/Telecom) business unit.

"We congratulate GI on being the first modem provider to receive Level 2 approval for a DOCSIS 1.1 hardware-ready modem and look forward to adding its new, high-speed technologies to our service offering," said Adam Grosser, Excite@Home's Vice President of Product Development. "GI's SURFboard modems are helping us offer our subscribers high-speed access to online communication, entertainment, and information."

The next-generation SB3100 cable modem is hardware-ready to support the new DOCSIS 1.1 specification, which calls for advanced Quality of Service (QoS) and Internet Protocol (IP) filtering functions. QoS enables operators to guarantee - and therefore charge increased rates for - higher-speed Internet access to targeted businesses or homes demanding it. It also enables the prioritization of voice calls to support real-time Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), which eliminates the delay found in earlier voice over IP technologies. GI has put a very high-speed processor, 5 times faster than its SB2100 modem, in the SB3100 to handle current and future advanced DOCSIS functions.

The SB2100 and SB3100 are part of GI's SURFboard family of DOCSIS-based cable modems. The SURFboard product line embodies over 5 years' experience designing cable modems and 50 years in the cable industry. GI's modems offer a standards-based architecture, high-performance processors, superior RF design, operator-friendly diagnostics, and outstanding field reliability.

Released by CableLabs in March 1997, DOCSIS calls for the interoperability of cable modems and associated networks manufactured by different suppliers. Interoperability speeds time to market by reducing risk for equipment purchasers and consumers and creates economies of scale for broadband network operators by creating multiple product sources.

Bernoff said that Web functionality and upgraded cable systems have made interactive television not only possible, but inevitable.

"Now we don't have to invent technologies," he said, "Because we use cable boxes already produced, to deliver interactivity along wires that are already upgraded, in a form that everyone already understands -- the Web."

Half way there (new highs).
