Advanced Statistical Multiplexing is Available Worldwide; Cable Operators and Broadcasters -- Bandwidth Management is Coming to a Country Near You 09/03/1999 Business Wire (Copyright (c) 1999, Business Wire)
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 3, 1999--V-Bits, Inc., a pioneering company in DSP-based MPEG-2 video manipulation and multiplexing technologies for the cable, satellite and broadcasting industries, today announced an agreement with Tiernan Communications Inc., a world leader in digital television systems. The terms of the agreement will place V-Bits' cost-effective RateMux(TM) statistical multiplexing technology in the hands of cable operators and broadcasters worldwide, through Tiernan's distribution channels. RateMux(TM) squeezes additional program channels into the available bandwidth by dynamically allocating data rates according to the content of each service.
"Beginning this October, whenever one of our highly-rated encoders gets sold into a digital television system, we can immediately offer stat-mux as an added feature that increases the value of our product to operators," states George Mancuso, Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Tiernan Communications, Incorporated. "And as an added plus, by partnering with V-Bits we can retain our reputation of meeting or exceeding international standards of quality. V-Bits' RateMux(TM) product is the best we have seen on the market. It is cost-effective and very easy to integrate, and we should know, since we have integrated more than 1000 digital television systems operating in some 25 countries."
Tiernan products are in use throughout the world under a wide range of environmental conditions. The modular architecture can be tailored to a wide variety of applications and allows for efficient expansion as service requirements grow. Tiernan products are compliant with the MPEG-2 and Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) standards, and provide interoperability with equipment from any compliant manufacturer.
"Just by highlighting one of the accomplishments of Tiernan, you can see why we wanted to have them as a strategic partner. They were the first to develop a HDTV encoder which is currently in use by major broadcasters including ABC and NBC," states Larry Grunewald, V-Bits' VP of Sales and Marketing. "By the end of this year we plan to add other strategic partnerships, that will distribute our RateMux digital grooming technology to all of the top communication channels, including cable, broadcast, satellite and telephone."
Applications for the RateMux product include customizing local digital program lineups, performing rate reduction of MPEG program streams, creating 256 QAM data streams, providing a gateway for digital ad insertion and creating statistically multiplexed outputs from VOD servers or local MPEG encoders. A future upgrade will allow multiplexing of HDTV and SDTV programs so that cable bandwidth can be used most efficiently.
