It can probably do OK for MPEG-1 SIF. Cycle times are a little faster than the KNI counterparts (MMX-1 doesn't count -- too lame to even worth mentioning... not that KNI isn't lame also).

G4 doesn't have a built in motion estimator. ~100 cycles per 16x16 block compare is hardly "built-in". 10 cycles would be more like it. It is just a packed compare & cross SIMD add instruction like the one in K7/3DNOW and P3/KNI.

The hardware camp can excel in the low bitrate game (which is all that matters, and where software-only encoders are weakest) thanks to motion compensated deinterlacing and noise reduction (as per DiviCom ClearMotion). Will Cube position itself in time to do this for CE ?

Probably not, as per usual.
