New Gartner Group/Dataquest Report
Confirms Network Associates' Sniffer As World's Fastest
Growing Market Share Leader in Network Management
Software

Report Also Confirms That Sniffer is Number One on the Microsoft Windows
NT Platform With More Than 50 Percent of the Market

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- According to the newly published
GartnerGroup/Dataquest ``Network and System Management Market Share' report, Network
Associates' (Nasdaq: NETA - news) Sniffer Total Network Visibility suite experienced the greatest
overall market share growth of any product in the broad network management software category
last year. On the Microsoft Windows NT platform, by far the fastest growing segment of the market,
the Sniffer product line holds a commanding 51.8 percent market share, more than three times that
of its nearest competitor. The award-winning Sniffer product line helps predict, monitor and analyze
network and application availability for today's demanding e-business marketplace.

The report found that network management software is a $1.09 billion market worldwide, growing
by more than 57 percent in 1998. The Microsoft Windows NT segment demonstrated the fastest
growth expanding by more than 136 percent and increasing its share of the market to 32.5 percent in
1998. GartnerGroup/Dataquest defines network management software as applications designed to
isolate and resolve faults on the network, measure and optimize performance, manage the network
topology, and track resource utilization over time.

According to the report, Network Associates' software licensing revenue for the Sniffer product line
increased by more than 111 percent in last year, not taking into account an additional 25 percent of
Sniffer-related hardware revenue. Even without hardware sales, the Sniffer product line ranked third
overall in the broad network management market, less than three percentage points behind the
largest enterprise framework vendors. According to the GartnerGroup/Dataquest report, Network
Associates is the worldwide market share leader of Microsoft Windows NT network management
software with a dominant 51.8 percent share. The new GartnerGroup/Dataquest report confirms the
findings of numerous market studies, including a recent Infonetics Research survey in which the
Sniffer product line was rated by network engineers as the number one solution to ensure network
availability.

``Customers are increasingly looking to the Sniffer product line to deliver e-businesses solutions that
help manage and maintain the availability and performance for a new generation of networks and
Internet-enabled business applications,' said Paul Farr, vice president of product management,
network management division, Network Associates. ``Our leading market share strength and
explosive growth clearly demonstrates that Network Associates is the preferred provider to the
thousands of organizations worldwide who are moving to e-business and can no longer afford delays
in network and application availability.'
