At the time they were a start up, with only about 12 employees. In my negotiations with them, they offered me stock options, if they went public or discounted $cash if they didn't. I took mostly cash, and only a few stock options.:-( Guess who this struggling start up was.?? Msft!!!! Trust me on that.
