Paul, Intel's penetration of the mission critical system market has been compared to AMD's penetration of the retail PC market. Both offer very compelling price/performance solutions in the very markets they're trying to penetrate. Sure, there are differences, but the similarities are too prominent to ignore.

Now both want to take the performance crown in their target markets. Intel wants to become the new performance leader in the enterprise server market with IA-64, while Athlon is threatening Pentium III in the business PC market. It comes down to a question of execution, since the RISC guys aren't willing to give up the mission critical market, while Intel isn't willing to give up business PCs.
