RadioShack's August Sales Increase 14% Eighth Consecutive Month of Double Digit Sales Gains

FORT WORTH, Texas, Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Tandy Corporation (NYSE: TAN) reported sales of its RadioShack division for the month of August 1999 were $322.5 million, a 14% increase compared to $283.8 million last year. RadioShack's continuing comparable store sales increased 10% when compared with the prior year period. Sales to RadioShack dealers, which are not in comparable store sales numbers, increased 81% as initial Christmas orders were shipped to the dealers.

"I am pleased with our solid sales performance this month when we were up against our largest gain during last year, which was the result of RadioShack and Compaq introducing the new Compaq store-within-a-store and Creative Learning Series. RadioShack's major categories are continuing their pace this year, with wireless phones and direct-to-home satellite systems leading the way," stated Chairman, President and CEO of Tandy Corporation/RadioShack Len Roberts. "RadioShack's comparable store sales gain for the first two months of the September quarter was 13%."

RadioShack's year-to-date total sales were $2,370.3 million this year compared to $2,040.2 million last year, representing an increase of 16%. Year-to-date comparable store sales increased 14%.

Best Buy Launches New & Improved Configure To Order Station

MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Best Buy's (NYSE: BBY) Configure to Order (CTO) computer stations now offer more choices with the addition of Hewlett Packard computers. Compaq models have been available since September 1998. This addition offers more selection and convenience, making the top name brand PCs available for customized orders.
