Gordon, although I'm all for a comprehensive foreign policy, the world is just too messy for "one size, fits all" decision making. It has to be on a case by case basis. If we are general defenders of freedom everywhere, then why not just deploy troops now:

In Afghanistan, where the populace is being terrorized by the Taliban warriors;

In Ethiopia, where stern military rulers deny their people freedom;

In Saudi Arabia, where the people are ruled by a monarchy, and not allowed any say in who their leaders will be;

In Iran, for obvious reasons;

In Iraq, also for obvious reasons;

In Taiwan, for the reasons mentioned by another contributor to this forum;

In Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, for the purpose of undoing our "error" of the 1970's and finally freeing these people from Communism;

In North Korea, for the same reason as immediately above, except the error occurred in the 1950's;

In Chechnya, where the Russians are trampling on a non-Russian group's right of self-determination;

In Kurdistan, where combined Turkish, Iraqi, Iranian, and Russian forces have for decades if not centuries denied any freedom to the Kurds.

This list could go on, and on, and on. If we want the maximum freedom possible of all people everywhere, shouldn't we wage war against each of these countries, or on behalf of the groups mentioned? After all, how can we close our eyes to these various oppressions?
