Research Notes... Privacy... NCR... Well, after doing some deeper digging, it is clear that NCR has taken the lead role in the creation of the ISTPA. What is, I suppose, somewhat baffling is why Microsoft, Bank of America, IBM, Intel, Hewlett Packard, Compaq, NCR, and KPMG are ALSO members of the OPA, Online Privacy Alliance, at privacyalliance.org. The OPA is huge group focusing specifically on privacy... not security and trust. My feeling... and it is only a feeling... is that the ISTPA was created by Reid Watts and Ms. Magnuson at Bank of America to be more action-oriented. Thus, it makes sense that they would be making specific technological recommendations... as I know will be the case. The mere fact that WAVX is at this important table... as A FOUNDING MEMBER... bodes well IMHO. Often these alliances are just so much eyewash. Based on my own research--and contacts with at least one of the players--I do not think that this will be the case here. Now, using the keywords "personal ATM" (don't ask me why I chose this particular phrase... 'cause it's more serendipity than science), I came across this interesting (and humorous) address by HP's then-CEO Lew Platt from back in April of 1998. It's worth a read... especially in the light of recent HP developments. hp.com On to NCR. They are absolutely focused on PRIVACY. And their innovative online publication, CHARGED, is worth a look.
