The main thing with cable is to remove any shared folders. (The easiest way to do this is just to remove File and Print Sharing in win95). Then, you just need to keep an eye (not necessarily a close one tho) on any network security holes, such as l0pht's recent release -> l0pht.com

Of course, removing shares becomes a bit more tricky if you have a home network or have winNT. In this case you'd probably want to setup a firewall. Of course, I'd recommend having a firewall if you have a home network no matter what. For winNT there are registry tweaks for removing the default shares of the drives.
