mariner, first of all,

PS: I did a spell check with the edit function here at SI. It doesn't recognize the word "internet". Unbelievable!

Capitalize Internet and the spell checker is happy.

I know some here don't like semi companies at all. I believe the networking space is a little different, when one
considers its really an internet infrastructure play.

What's not to like? The semiconductor index (SOXX) leads any reasonable size index over the last year. Check out the SOXX vs. the S&P, for example (I don't know of a chart server that can get NAZ and SOXX together).

quote.yahoo.com^SOXX&d=1ys

The semis are supposed to be in just the first year of a 3 or 4 year boom cycle (unless Asia implodes again or something equally poor).

I don't know the network chip biz well at all, but I guess I'd better learn with Intel trying to bully their way in. Off the top, and in keeping with the ground rules of this thread, discussion would be limited to potential princes(?). This is because, to me, there are no emerging gorillas at this point. Of course, Intel in micros and, maybe TI in DSP, are the only existing gorillas. Oh, and AMAT is, what, a king? Anyway, I don't see PMCS, VTSS, BRCM or any of the others getting much beyond niche playing in the foreseeable. Hell, one stock I have, LSI, might be closer to a king (ASIC, SOAC) than any other semi company beyond Intel and TI. MMCN and Conexant are two interesting new players (CNXT a spinoff of Rockwell, not exactly new). Where did you want to go with this?
