In fact it is possible. All depends how you define highgrading.

The gold in these epithermal low grade deposits is never perfectly distributed. A low grade open pit mine with an average of 1 gram/ton may have sweet spots of 1.3g/t and more. In depressed times, these operators can process the high grade ore which is 30% higher than mine average. So even if the ore is still very low grade by all standards, it provide them with 30% more gold for the same throuput and cost per ton.
