Blue, you are quite right. When employed in its usual sense, the term "internationalism" was precisely that -- a self-justifying concept for Soviet policy, just as "democracy" is often used to justify U.S. policy. As I said, the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan was justified in terms of the alleged need for the Soviet Union to perform its "internationalist duty." And many soldiers killed in that war were buried under headstones with the inscription: "He died fulfilling his internationalist duty in Afghanistan."
