Internet Direct and Look Communications Inc., which offers digital wireless entertainment services in Quebec and Ontario, are creating a new company that will participate in Industry Canada's licensing process for multipoint communications systems in the 2500 MHz range. The new company, Inukshuk Internet Inc., will be dedicated to connecting Canadians across a state-of-the-art Internet protocol access network. On June 12, 1999, Industry Canada issued a call for MCS licence applications. MCS networks can deliver new high-speed broadband services, such as Internet, data, voice, multimedia and broadcasting. A critical part of the licence application will be the design of learning plans, created in close collaboration with designated learning authorities across the country, to optimize the potential of MCS technology and provide Canadians with lifelong learning opportunities. "The strengths of Microcell, Look and I.D. Internet Direct are extremely complementary," explained Andre Tremblay, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Microcell. "Our respective networks and technologies complement and enhance one another. With the creation of Inukshuk, we are in a position to offer superior product and service packages to consumers. In line with the licensing policy, we will work to develop learning plans, aligned to regional educational priorities, that offer Canadians new tools to acquire skills and knowledge," concluded Mr. Tremblay. "Look, I.D. Internet Direct and Microcell have already contributed to a number of initiatives that advance the knowledge economy in Canada," said Guthrie Stewart, president and chief executive officer of Look Communications Inc. "Our combined track records show a strong commitment to bringing new applications, products and services to market, while promoting innovation and research. We are already in the business of connecting Canadians and intend to expand that business in a significant way," added Mr. Stewart. The Inukshuk is a stone monument in the shape of a man, traditionally used by the Inuit to provide direction to travellers across the North. Michael Cytrynbaum, chairman of I.D. Internet Direct, stated: "We chose the name because it symbolizes our own commitment. Just as the first Inukshuk offered guidance across the vast territory of the North, Inukshuk Internet will serve to provide Canadians with guidance and navigational tools across new and unexplored territory, that of cyberspace." Look Communications is a new competitor in the distribution of digital television services and high-speed Internet access. Look currently provides its services in Quebec and Ontario through a proven digital wireless technology known as multipoint distribution systems in the 2500 MHz range, commonly called wireless cable. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission awarded Look Communications a broadcast distribution licence for Southern Ontario in August of 1997, and for Eastern Ontario and Quebec in February of 1998. The principal shareholders of Look Communications include Telesystem Ltd., Teleglobe Inc., CTV Inc., Covington Wireless Communications (Ontario) Ltd. and GTC Transcontinental Group Ltd. Sorry for the delay in responding, Dale. No, I guess I missed the photo of our Johnny Mnemonic. I feel that the telephone line uplink is not as bad of a solution as one might first think. I have a cable modem from Rogers right now and the fact of the matter is that the upstream speed is significantly slower than the downstream speed. This works just fine. The problem is that you tie up the phone line with this scenario. Enter Microcell and the solution becomes more attractive (see siliconinvestor.com. This provides a dedicated, all digital (therefore high speed), separate uplink line via a PCS wireless connection. The picture is beginning to come into focus and I like what see so far. ... HubTech
