The point is that 32-bit x86 (Athlon) should not be compared to 64-bit IA64 (Merced/Mckinley) as some have been doing. When Merced ships next summer, it should be compared to Alpha that is shipping at that time. With Dirk Meyer still at AMD, I would bet that the K8 leans heavily on Alpha design implementations.

Yes, Mckinley should be one hell of a processor. So much so that people will be willing to pay $5000 a piece. But this leaves plenty of room for K8 at $700 each. On eight and sixteen way SMP systems, the savings will be hard to ignore.
