Trev : If you put yourself in the shoes of a hedge fund operator you will appreciate the difficulties they have and why they have to resort to what, in my opinion, are desperate measures in order to make a profit.

I don't believe the funds, including LTCM, are rogues. In fact, LTCM had on its board some of the top names in finance (Merton, Scholes -- Nobel Prize Laureates. I know these names because Merton was the external examiner for my son's PhD and Scholes was his hero). I just think the fund gets too big and the gearing works against it.

By the way, buying an ounce will be OK but just make sure you don't sell any of your mother-in-law's old bangles!
