John -
Also there are many other choices in this arena, while the VCR war was basically and either/or situation. IMO, Wi-LAN at this time remains a somewhat risky speculative hedge, and considerable timely developments are required to make it a screaming buy.
I agree with your remarks. I have felt for months that Wi-LAN is on the knife's edge with respect to whether they can get their product into the wireless "consciousness" quickly enough. While I have no doubt that they can grab a significant share of the market in some areas, in the key American market, they are almost invisible. My posts to the Last Mile thread, and the Broadband thread, on SI, tend to confirm this. Even though they are technologically ahead of their competitors, BreezeCOM and Aironet, it is on these two companies that most discussion by investors is centered. With good reason, too...these companies have a hammerlock on their markets, and I see nothing in the way of an assault on that market by Wi-LAN, right now. Also, I have been doing a bit of research on the effect of the diffferent consortia on Wi-LAN, such as WECA, Bluetooth, etc. Any student of history knows that many associations are built to exclude the superior (or protect the inferior). Whether one of the associations will seek to exclude Wi-LAN, on the premise that the real purpose is to propose a "standard", is another question.
Of note: in the last two weeks, despite diligent investigation, I have yet to see a post - outside of Wi-LAN threads and Wi-LAN NR's (or associated ones) - of IEEE 802.11(a) technology and products for the wireless market. General discussion of the subject, and wireless implementations, just doesn't exist.
Finally, I'd like to cross-post some URL's from SH where a preliminary prospectus from Wi-LAN, dated 31 Aug/99, was posted: this is probably the most succinct explanation of all aspects of Wi-LAN's current situation available.

Good comments, John. I'll really be watching Wi-LAN's efforts in the next six months to see how they will "raise consciousness" about their products, and attract the interest of potential users/buyers.
