When we sit back and think about a Prez it all boils down to one thing. How believable and acceptable is the Prez with the electorate? When the prez is on TV and you bring him/her home on your screen for a fireside chat, how believable is the prez? It has nothing to do with Monica or Irangate for that matter. If that was so then Reagan would be gone after Irangate, the Republicans would have walked up to the White House and asked him to resign. But the general consensus amongst the American public was that he should say. The same was the case with Clinton during Monicagate. Both these prez stike a chord with the American people. Both can captivate their audience. Reagan reminded people of the much liked John Wayne. Clinton visits the disaster areas and hugs the people, enters their homes, breaks through the security ring of Secret Service etc. Gore on the other hand cannot connect. In contrast, he is stiff and when he visits the disaster areas, he is surrounded by Secret Service and he just walks through the disaster neighborhood with a straight face. Now look at the present candidates for prez and look at their profile. Set up Bradley and Liddy Dole against the rest of the candidates. These 2 are very warm. You cannot forget Liddy during the last Republican convention. She "thinks different". She goes out to the floor and addresses them from 4 to 5 feet away. It is the same with Bradley. And another person that comes close to that, IMO, is Sen. McCain. People believe him. He does not pander. He has a consistent voting record against abortion, but his utterences indicate that he is a very practical person. Or else he would not have succeeded in getting the conservatives in the Republican party all riled up with his recent comments on abortion. I am personally very fearful of the Republican party, since they held the country hostage on a trivial issue of Monicagate and made this country the laughing stock of the world. Only in the US do we make such trivial things such as Monicagate, gay rights and prayer in schools a big issue. In other countries, such issues are best left to the individuals. And they insist that in the case of Monicagate it is lying under oath. "We had no business in getting into the private lives of others. This rule applies to all US citizens and the prez is one of them. Does not matter". And the Republicans want to take that right away. They start with the prez and then they will move onto other citizens. They are doing the same with the issue of prayer in schools. They want all of us should fall in line and be forced to display publicly our religious rituals in the form of prayer. Why, why do I have to do that? After all didn't the early immigrants flee such a situation in their countries they came from? Let us look at the French. We know that French President Mitterand had a wife and a concubine and both of them were behind his casket during the funeral procession. The French electorate said nothing. Vendit, I hope it is okay to post this from the barbecue pit on Labor day and share my political thoughts. After all we are not Democrats and Republicans but Americans. Happy Labor day Chinmoy
