Pete Seeger sang it, but I don't think he was the first. You're making me nostalgic bringing up Pete's name. My morris dance team used to dance from time to time when he stopped with the Clearwater along the Hudson to play and raise money for the Clearwater and the River project. After the concerts, all the performers would gather on the sloop and have a hootenanny, sometimes until dawn. Over time a lot of the great singers and groups showed up -- Baez, Collins, and the Weavers and the Kingston Trio and Derek Bok and the Clancy Brothers and all. God, being young and single in those days was great!
