Now that's a legitimate argument. Treaty obligations are important. We have an historical deal with Taiwan, but not with the Kurds, etc. But I'm not quite sure what type of deal we have with Taiwan. I assume we haven't signed a suicide pact. If the PRC was to invade, would other nations truly lose respect for us for not sending a million boys over there to fight, or for not attempting the nuclear incineration of Beijing? I doubt it.

And even if we did get branded as untrustworthy allies, these friends of ours have nowhere else to turn for support. We've already shown on many occasions that we will act where our interests are clearly threatened (e.g., Iraq, more than once).
