It will only be a major victory for China because we continue to stake so much political capital on Taiwan. I really don't believe they'd think "all's clear" for an assault on Japan following a successful invasion of Formosa. So what it boils down to is: the PRC is hot on getting Taiwan back because they actually believe this island is part of their territory, and they don't want a US puppet state a few miles off their shore (it's their Cuba); we painted ourselves into a corner over this because we wanted this outpost on China's doorstep (and not because we were convinced that as Taiwan goes, so goes Japan, etc). So we have continual heavy tension with another nuclear superpower over an island that is no longer of strategic importance to us (given advances in weaponry, satellite surveillance, and the like). What to do? The overriding American interest here is in somehow reuniting Taiwan with the mainland. That may sound cruel, but I think we are putting America in more danger by constantly playing this high stakes game of Risk.
