sharkyextreme.com Sharky Extreme : PC : Hardware : On Site Visit: Intel Developer Forum '99 Sep 5th, 1999 Camino: Gaining Momentum i820, or Camino as it's often referred to, is approaching its launch date. Intel has committed to a late September time frame for the new desktop core logic architecture's introduction, you can be sure that 10 to 20 aftermarket mainboards will be available for purchase on that very day. These boards will be offered in a multitude of versions, principally based on peripheral slot configuration and main system ram support. Thus far, Sharky Extreme has learned that most of the i820 mainboards that will be available at the time of the chipset's launch will be offered in what is being called a "2 + 2" format. 2 + 2 means that the boards will be able to support either PC-133 SDRAM or RDRAM depending upon which the user decides to utilize via two DIMM slots and two RIMM slots. As in the past, when mainboards were similarly equipped with both SIMM and DIMM slots (1996 - 1997), users will not be able to utilize both SDRAM and RDRAM in their systems at the same time because of voltage and power differences. Speaking of RDRAM? No matter whether you love it or hate it, RDRAM is being supported by "96% of the world's memory manufacturers" according to IDF literature concerning the controversial new memory. The degree of support from the manufacturers, who had vocally complained about the high costs associated in producing the sensitive RIMMs over the past year, seems to now be very high. The largest exhibition booths at the show contained RDRAM RIMMs from almost every possible vendor, in configurations up to 256MB PC800 format. We heard various estimates about RDRAM pricing in 99, the consensus seemed to agree that a cost of $2.00 - $3.00 per megabyte will likely be the scenario buyers will face. That's a hefty hit compared to the relatively inexpensive price that current PC-100 SDRAM sells for, although as the quantities of RDRAM production ramp up to large levels, the price should fall substantially after the first six months. Late September is the time that RDRAM marketing will swing into high gear as larger PC integrators such as Dell and Compaq offer complete i820/AGP 4X/RDRAM systems to the consumer. sharkyextreme.com Conclusion This year's IDF was an impressive show. You got the feeling while there that the majority of high-technology companies that attended will be the evangelists that humanity consults to transform their PCs in a way that not only improves life, but also assists in the eventual evolution of our world's society. Heavy stuff.
