Chaz,

As we talk about JDSU, (for example) we could look back to see what other companies operate in the same space, and that would give us a sense of context.

If I can make a suggestion ...

In that regard this forum is not perfect, mostly due to the technological limitations and the inability for each of us to custom fit it tomeet our personal needs. As a result, each of us needs to be more organized in the way we use our own PC. A couple of ideas:

1) When you see a post that might be helpful in the future, use your browser to save it as a favorite. Make sure you change the title so it identifies the importance the post has for you. Title Example: JDSU and Competitors

2) Develop a system in your word processor and spreadsheet programs to create a "living story" about the company or market you're interested in. When you see a press release, article or message that tells that unfolding story, copy the information or data into your word processor or spreadsheet. Assign a title to that, highlight key information in a bold font, etc., etc.

Perhaps Stew and others have some good pointers about that. I mention Stew because he seems to be able to bring up reams of data about Gemstar that I have to believe exceed the capacity of anyone's memory; the guy must be incredibly organized.

>> on the whole, far more useful than UF and others may have initially expected.

Very perceptive observation, chaz. The thread began as a meeting place for Gorilla Game oriented investors to discuss their favorite picks and compare allocations. Somewhere along the line, just coincidentally about the time Mike Buckley joined us <g>, the thread began to turn into an analytical tool.

>> Uncle, have you yet entertained the idea of our writing the thread's version of Beardstown Ladies?

The success of the Beardstown Ladies was proven to be in error. Our experiment is pretty new, so I'm not anxious to proclaim G&K as a panacea for the average investor's dilemma, which imo is how much risk to assume while seeking above average returns. But if our Hunt ever proves worthy of being chronicled, I would hope that Artemis would lead the effort. For those not familiar with her background, Jill is a successful author and a professor of journalism at a major university. That's why I always use my spell checker when she's around <g>.

>> Perhaps our ringmasters might do some sorting

That would be a full time effort, chaz, and Aunt Nancy won't let me quit my day job to attempt it <g>. Seriously, I think the best way to use this thread is to identify a Champion for the company you find attractive, and initiate a discussion. Just off the top of my head, here are a few of the experts I turn to:

gmst: NY Stew
csco: Justin
intc: Tony Viola
sebl: Merlin
msft: Teflon
qcom: Dancelot
ntap: Down South
jdsu: cha2
sfe: Teflon
rmbs: Apollo
visx: Joel

Or if you are looking for guidance by sector or topic:

Valuation: Merlin
Gorilla Gaming: Merlin
Investing Strategy: Dancelot
Semiconductors: Tony V.
Fibre Optics: cha2
E-Commerce: Teflon
Software: Down South
Front Office: Merlin
News Hound: Mike Piturro
Reference Books: chaz

There are so many contributors and so much expertise on this thread, I wouldn't be able to make the lists comprehensive without wading through a few thousand posts. Maybe you'd care expand of this theme, chaz, and help identify the thread's company and sector leaders. They should always be a starting point for serious dd.

btw, did you notice how many times Buckley's name came up?
Merlin, do you sell regular carpet, or is it the kind you can fly on?
