You get them in the mail almost daily. Letters congratulating you on being pre-approved for a fixed-rate, low-APR credit card. The offers can be very tempting, though it is almost impossible to make sense of the terms and conditions listed in the fine print.
Last year, credit card companies received an estimated $18 billion in credit card penalty fees from their cardholders. But have these consumers done something wrong? Almost 3,000 First USA credit card holders don?t think so. They have filed complaints against the credit card giant for erroneous late fees and interest rates that doubled and tripled without warning.
Tonight, correspondent Valeri Williams, from our Dallas affiliate WFAA, reports on her four-month investigation into First USA. Is this alleged overcharging confined just to this one company or is it industry wide? Ted Koppel speaks with Carter Warren, executive Vice President of Marketing for First USA and with Ed Mierzwinski, consumer advocate with U.S. Public Interest.
