I don't know what histoplasmosis is, but it sounds like another good reason not to play with bats.

It's actually hard to approach them too closely; they live up in the tops of trees. The smell can be overpowering, though, if the wind is blowing the wrong way. They are impressive around sunset, though; they fly in huge clouds across the bay, a great sight while paddling.

I once saw an eagle snatch one out of a treetop, an impressive sight in its own right.

Paddled a few hours this morning, no marine life sightings (water was choppy enough that I wasn't paying much attention), but 2 eagles low over the water and a magnificent rainbow, so close it seemed I could touch it, made up for that....
