True enough, Joan, although even conservatives ordinarily refer to the first type as the Establishment, and regard them as moderate- to- liberal because the institutional consensus is regarded that way. As for the Rockefeller Republicans specifically, you are correct, they are often not especially liberal, but they would generally fit well enough into the moderate category, and some, such as Lowell Weicker, who eventually quit the party, were pretty indisputably liberals....
