Well, you deleted the very next sentence where I make the connection: Higher MB costs make the "slow" Athlon unattractive even at a silly low price. Suppose I can buy a slow Athlon for $1, but the motherboard costs me an extra $100 over a mature P6 MB. The true cost of the CPU, as far as me deciding whether or not to buy it, is $101.
