Uncle Frank, I asked the same question about a month ago on the Cymer thread. ScotMcI in response 22806 provided the answers from Akins, the CEO in the August conference call (I would have provided the link or a copy but for some reason it just doesn't want to work the morning) See reply 22806 for the complete text because it has some reference links.

The reported installed base of lasers at chip makers is
Cymer 97%
Komatsu <3
Lambda <1
Ushio <<1

In addition to that for the last year and a half while the market has been down CYMI has beefed up their service and driven much more of their revenues toward service fees and spare parts.

I am told they hold the high ground from a patent and proven equipment standpoint that will benefit from the move to 300mm chip fabrication and a decrease in line width. (My expertise is showing through)

I agree that it is cyclical but it appears that this is the right part of the cycle to be associated with. The stock was beat up badly but up ~5X in the last 52 weeks.

I am not touting it although I own it and have since October 97, a bad time to buy. I bought the gap down and hung on as it continued down. It has recovered nicely and should go ride up nicely with the resurrection of Asia and the chip building business.

I asked Mike the question about evaluating it in the context of the GG because if 97% share does not make a gorilla it certainly makes a very powerful king.
