axp,

Also, reports are that Merced will not even be able to
outperform Pentium chips when it first arrives. In this case it will be useful mainly for developers to prepare software until
succeeding versions appear (HP's McKinley) and to work out the bugs in 64-bit NT.

Old rumors, axp. Along with last week's demo of Merced, Intel said it will outperform Alpha, SPARCIII, and be close to HP's PA-RISC. Also, HP's Bob Carlson, Marketing Director at HP, has said in articles two or three times in the last couple of weeks that HP will ship Merced in servers. McKinley will be much faster than Merced because it will be on 0.13 micron, but Intel, HP and others have all intention of making Merced a production chip.
