Hey, C, don't mean to butt in, but I don't see how caring for animals makes one ambivalent about the welfare of children.

Question: Are you trying to say that the animal rights people are always proponents for abortion and homosexuality? If so, I can see where you are coming from with that response. No matter what your opinion on abortion or teaching homosexuality in schools and what not, it should not be policy that conservatives should attack the animal rights people. To me, life is life. I am against abortion as much as murder, rape is terrible no matter if it's a man, woman or child being subjected to it. What it all comes down to is life, and animals have just as much a right to it as we do. In my experience, some of the most violent and untrustworthy people I've met abuse animals.

It amazes me that there are millions of children raped and murdered each year and some people are more worried about animal rights, save the trees and idiotic things like that...

Where are your priorities?

Good point c.horn. Isn't it amazing that even though there are people starving in Bangladesh... emotionally devastated earthquake victims in Turkey... victims of gun violence in the inner city... aids related deaths in the third world which could be prevented if only medical care were available... women deprived of an education in the name of fanatic religious zealotry in Afganistan... economic devastation in the former soviet union of the magnitude not seen since post WWI Germany... meanwhile the earth sits on the brink of devastating environmental catastrophe due to global warming...

The sad truth is most that post on SI are so far removed from these harsh realities that it is not obvious how to make a difference (although many would like to)... I would suggest that by contributing to the high tech economy either directly or through investments is a good thing however, most SI posters do at least that, and the knowledge dissemination is high...

But then again there are those posters that can't think of anything more meaningful to say than, "that one got his butt kicked by SI Bob".

Children vs. animals --- a compassion thing...

Many believe that those who abuse children begin walking their perverted path with the abuse of animals; hence, the connection.

Cheers, PW.

P.S.

I find my neighbour's cat less bothersome than their kids.

P.P.S.

I don't support the 'Animal' people. I think they've gone nuts over saving every mangy mutt only to keep it caged for life because no sane family would ever want it as a pet.

P.P.P.S.

I think if people want a pet they should be responsible: feed it, vet it, fix it, spend some time with it, and put it to sleep when it's life becomes unbearable.

Why does it have to be either/or? Can one not be against cruelty to children and cruelty to animals? Can one not want to save lives and save trees? Compassion is a virtue, regardless of the object of the compassion.
