My understanding is that Embassy uses DES (triple DES) rather than RSA. DES itself is next to useless for real protection (see the book "Cracking DES" by the EFF) and I doubt if triple DES will hold out for much longer either. This is obviously part of a larger public-policy debate, but it does argue that any encryption scheme had better be flexible enough to accommodate new ciphers and longer keylengths over its commercial lifespan since this will clearly be needed if the encryption is to have more than a cosmetic purpose.
