Delph, Thanks for the nice summary on ANF. That is one that has been in our long portfolio since Dec. 9, 1998. . .and has served us well. . . slow and steady gains. Your prediction is as sound as your analysis, IMO.

I picked ETYS last week, so that we would have one E-commerce leader that stands to benefit most from the coming season . . . was still relatively an undiscovered recent IPO. . .was on the lower side of its trading range. . .had a fairly low float. . .and was a pure play E-commerce, like AMZN. Not sure if I stated all of that when I posted my buy.

ANF has a nice E-presence. . . but is also a leader in bricks-and-mortar specialty retailing. . .another that is worth consideration is LTD. The Limited owns 84% of IBI [Intimate Brands], which owns Victoria's Secret and Bath & Body Works. . .it also owns Express and Express, Too. . . popular with college age and high school age girls, respectively.

Some dress retailers that cater to older women owned by LTD include: Lerner New York and Lane Bryant. . . and an ANF competitor called "Structure", as well as several chains, which I am unfamiliar [perhaps in the U.K.?] called Galyan's and Henri Bendel.

From LTD's most recent sales report issued last week: The Limited, Inc. (NYSE: LTD; London) reported comparable store sales increased 12% for the four weeks ended August 28, 1999. The Company reported net sales of $731.6 million for the four-week period ended August 28, 1999, compared to sales of $664.4 million for the comparable four-week period ended August 29, 1998.

Sales of $5.104 billion for the thirty weeks ended August 28, 1999 increased 7% from sales of $4.756 billion for the same period last year. The Company's comparable stores sales increased 11% for the thirty weeks ended August 28, 1999.

As you can probably tell, I like good retailers. Another that I like, that will one day awaken from a long slumber is SPGLA. This is a play on catalog sales/internet sales and bricks and mortar. Spiegel owns Eddie Bauer and Newport News. . .which it was supposed to change its symbol to reflect. [EDDI?] This past sales report had gross sales, net sales and comparable store sales all showing double digit increases.

This stock was beaten down last year, but in May began a quick rise, which has pegged the stock near its 52-wk highs. . . with new money coming into the markets and into the retail sector for the coming season. . . I expect SPGLA to breakout and go considerably higher from where it sits just above 9 bucks per share.

Not every retailer will do great this season. . .but these issues represent some plays that have consistently outperformed the department store sector and many others, through their higher quality merchandise and fine designs. . . I'm talking about Abercrombie and Fitch, Eddie Bauer, Newport News, Victoria's Secret, Structure, Limited and Express. . . represented by ANF, LTD, SPGLA and IBI. All have strong E-commerce deals to support them and add to their bottom line.

Yes. . .it is a good time to be shopping retail stocks. . . anyone have other suggestions?

How about some of my other favorites. . .BBY; FTUS; WMT or whenever the market turns lower [FDO or DG]. . . does anyone know if Costco is public? I recently decided I like their store considerably more than Sam's Club. [Since getting married last year. . .I am now shopping for an army] . . . "does this come in a bigger size? How about a 10-gallon drum?"

DlphcOracl..Agreed on ETYS..some thoughts..

With Xmas coming EYTS is an easy 2x IMHO,longer term iam unsure given the present market cap and the low barrier of entry in this biz...Toys R Us, WallMart, and Paul Allen with Zany Brainy (Vulcan Ventures owns 2 million shares) could impact the ETYS "street perception". Paul Allen has the funds to market a significant competitive challenge to ETYS and fully believe he will as part of his broadband initiative. That said, I see better returns for ZANY long term, but now it ETYS all the way for the swing into xmas.
