Well, it is an interesting philosophical problem: can one build a "science" on statistical analyses and simplified models of real world events? If not, then there are no social sciences, which is a reasonable position. I would argue that if one makes allowances for a lesser degree of exactitude, one can find usable patterns, float causal explanations with a high degree of confidence, and gain in predictive accuracy, and therefore that it is legitimate to consider there to be social sciences, among them economics....
