Branch Davidian siege videotapes 09/04/99 Here are details on tapes known to have been made of the events on April 19, 1993, when an FBI tear-gas assault on the Branch Davidian compound ended with a deadly fire: FBI Tape 1: º Released: On Thursday; discovered by the FBI during a search of files at Hostage Rescue Team headquarters in Quantico, Va. º Type: Infrared; taken from an FBI plane nicknamed the Nightstalker and called a "FLIR" tape. º Time recorded: About 6 to 8 a.m. º Contents: The excerpt released contains sound of a radio transmission at 7:48 a.m. between Richard M. Rogers, Hostage Rescue Team commander, and deputy commander Stephen P. McGavin, in which Agent Rogers authorizes use of pyrotechnic military CS tear-gas rounds against a concrete bunker near the compound. FBI Tape 2: º Released: On Friday; FBI officials delayed release to U.S. marshals, saying that they had to make a copy. º Type: Infrared FLIR tape. º Time recorded: About 8 to 9:30 a.m. º Contents: The excerpt released includes sound of a member of the "Charlie 1" Bradley fighting vehicle team reporting that the CS gas rounds "bounced off" the bunker. The excerpt also includes radio transmissions from a member of another team suggesting that "Charlie 1" move its vehicle to possibly get a better angle at the bunker. Results are not recorded because the audio portion of the tape was discontinued at 8:24 a.m. at the request of one of the Bradley drivers, Justice Department officials say. FBI Tape 3: º Released: A portion was played at the 1994 criminal trial of Branch Davidians and at congressional hearings in 1995. º Type: Infrared FLIR tape. º Time recorded: From 10:42 a.m. through the fire, which began at 12:07 p.m. DPS Tape º Released: This year; obtained by Colorado filmmaker Michael McNulty. º Type: Real-time videotape. º Time recorded: During the tear-gas assault. º Contents: Recorded by the Texas Department of Public Safety about a quarter-mile from the rear of the compound, it shows an FBI helicopter flying low over the rear of the compound and white flashes visible in the open doorway of the helicopter. Mr. McNulty's film includes experts who say those flashes could have come only from gunfire. FBI officials have said agents did not fire a single shot; congressional leaders say they have retained outside experts to determine what caused the flashes on this tape and the FBI FLIR tapes. CBS Video º Released: April 19, 1993. º Time recorded: Although news reports, using the footage in 1993, said that the film was taken between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m., journalists involved in making the footage say that segment of the film was taken at 7:47 a.m. º Contents: Shows two men emerging from a Bradley fighting vehicle at the rear of the compound and one of the men firing a projectile from a shoulder weapon at a pit some distance away. The camera pans to the pit and shows white clouds of smoke, which experts say are a signature of military CS gas rounds, billowing from the pit.
