But bandwidth isn't a performance constraint. PC manufacturers dropped interleaved memory (which more than doubles bandwidth for SDRAM) because it added a few dollars in cost and produced no benefit (except for servers, which continue to use it). Cache costs more than interleaving, but since it produces measureable benefits, it is standard on all PCs.

Intel told them it was going to ship only processors and chipsets that used rambus. DRAM wouldn't be supported anymore so IBM etc had to either use rambus or not use Intel. It had nothing to do with labs. That situation is now changing, and Rambus's prospects are changing along with it.
