ALERT: Be careful if you get an email from your ISP regarding late or missing credit card payment. I just got an email from my ISP warning me about a scam that is occuring now ... among many ISP's.

"If you already went to the site and gave them your credit card information, you may want to contact your bank/card issuer about how to proceed. Also, if you did go to the site and gave them your info, please notify me as well, so I can pass the information along to the proper authorities and attorneys involved."

Fortunately, this didn't happen to me. Full details in WIRED article:

New Web Scam Attacks ISPs
"According to our records, your payment for your Internet access account is late. Perhaps you overlooked it? It is very important that you contact us as soon as possible. To update your account information, please go to" ...."

Oh, and once you get there, we'll rob you blind ...

Experts say 9/9/99 problems a myth:

yahoo.co.uk

>>Experts say there is almost no chance that 9/9/99 will have any impact at all.

"The reality is that 9/9/99 is one of the persistent myths of the year 2000 problem. It's not quite a unicorn, not quite 100 percent mythical, we've only been able to identify
two instances of 9/9/99 coding in extremely obscure systems," said Andy Kyte, analyst with the U.S. information technology research company Gartner Group . <<

Y2K "READY vs Y2K "COMPLIANT".

I have assumed that "READY" meant that the systems would work properly ie. they would not shut down, or cause any other problems for their customers ie. utilities, banks, hospital equipment etc.

"COMPLIANT" refers to any other indirect systems ie. system logs, billing, and other systems which would not report the results accurately. For example many medical systems may report the log as 01/01/00 even though the equipment was working fine.

Your video camera may not be Y2K "compliant" if it displays the date as 01/01/00 but it will be "ready" it it still records next year.
