Responding to Barai's notion that the days of the $500 PC are numbered, you comment e-machines, from my understanding is profitable. why would it all of a sudden go away?

Absolutely correct. In addition, historically, software improvements have demanded ever more memory and ever faster processors. The "net based computing" model that is emerging can be done on dumber PCs, less memory and slower processors, which could turn out to be a big "Oops" for everyone from MSFT to Intel to MU. I'd guess the $500 PC's days are numbered--it's going to get way cheaper. I saw an eMachine 366Mhz in the paper selling (after various rebates from online service and manufacturer) for $74.
