Good point about the names, especially for residents of an empire. Certainly that's true about the United States. There are over 100 languages spoken at home by children who attend school here in Fairfax County, Virginia. I am fascinated by conversations between people for whom English is not the native language, say between a Korean immigrant and a Pakistani immigrant, how carefully and precisely the conversants speak. Pat Buchanan, who also lives in Fairfax County, has a completely different reaction than I! As do his followers. They long for a time when only English-speaking immigrants were allowed into the country. But I, who am part French, part German, and part Croatian, (and part English) know that time never existed.
