<< My 223 Ackley (just got it back) measures 27", my Browning High Wall (270, more gun than is really fun to shoot if you ask me) is 28". >>

The 22-250 I built has a 27" barrel. Of course I don't carry it around hunting. Shorter barrels have a place in hunting situations. I have a friend who shoots a bolt action 10 ga. at geese. 36" barrel. I was hunting with him on a cold day when the firing pin froze in the shoot position and when he slammed the bolt home she went kablam. It broke his thumb but thanks to the long barrel I can still hear. At least the muzzle was out of the pit.

You think a .270 kicks? Try a few belted magnums. They will loosen your teeth. A 10 bore has a warning that people under 150 pounds shouldn't shoot them. Doesn't apply to me. Did you ever see Charmichael's article about shooting the .700 nitro express side by? Made by Holland and Holland. Ammo at $100 each. He pulled the trigger and became a Christian, suddenly.
