Depends on the species, Christopher. A genetic preference for monogamy clearly is not a "desirable trait" to pass on for lions, for example. But it definitely is for some birds.

Humans are so complex, and human societies so different from each other, in this respect as well as in others, that I am not sure one can speak of any genetic (as against cultural) preference for anything.
