Guidelines for the Successful Maintenance of Two Different Characters on a Discussion Site on the Internet

™ © ® Mr. The Chicken Brains to You ™ © ®

OVERVIEW

The simplest way to get started is to create a "character" in writing. Perhaps on a 'Word'™ © ® document, something like that. The more complex and detailed, the better. Get a very solid understanding of the character BEFORE you put him on the Internet.

For example, Tastes Like Chicken ™ © ®("TLC" ™ © ®) has never mentioned that he was a stockbroker on Flamfoozy ™ © ®. Everyone knows that's cOUSIN SHORTY ™ © ®. SHORTY ™ © ® never gets belligerent or antagonistic, he is too cool. He just interviews people and makes them look like boneheads. SHORTY ™ © ® is pretty friendly almost all the time. The worst thing he has ever done is have somebody wait in the airlock. SHORTY ™ © ® is ten times as dangerous as TLC ™ © ®, because SHORTY ™ © ® never telegraphs his moves. By the time the victim realizes he's in trouble, it's too late. But SHORTY ™ © ® never picks on anybody that hasn't begged to be picked on, and he never apologizes, because there is nobody to apologize to when he is done with The Big Blue Beam ™ © ®. It's almost as if TLC ™ © ® has SHORTY ™ © ®as a backup in case logic fails.

TLC ™ © ® will apologize instantly if he is wrong, and he is wrong sometimes. TLC ™ © ® appears more arrogant than cOUSIN SHORTY ™ © ®, but TLC ™ © ® also knows his limitations. TLC ™ © ® is willing to learn, SHORTY ™ © ® already "knows everything".

TLC ™ © ® writes in a very specific style, using lots of Capitalization, parentheses, and commas. This annoys Admin Bob ™ © ®, (which makes TLC ™ © ® laugh). SHORTY ™ © ® can't spell at all. TLC ™ © ® is logical and "overexplains" things for all mammals, SHORTY ™ © ® hardly ever explains anything. If mammals can't read what he writes, too bad for them, he could care less. TLC ™ © ® calls SHORTY ™ © ® his "stupid cousin"; SHORTY ™ © ® has never said a bad word about TLC ™ © ®. SHORTY ™ © ® likes BBQ, TLC ™ © ® likes sushi. SHORTY ™ © ® likes ginger ale; TLC ™ © ® likes vodka gimlets.

These are two very different characters. It would be silly to have TLC start off a post with "AHA AHAHAHA AH AHAHAHAHAHAH!"; everyone knows that's cOUSIN SHORTY. Similarly, it would make no sense for SHORTY to type a sentence with every word spelled correctly, or to announce that his cousin TLC was not just a reptile, but a breath mint and an oven cleaner. SHORTY would never do that, that is a TLC line.

THE RULES

1. NEVER mix writing styles.

2. Check all posts before you submit them to see if you have left clues that hint that you are one person writing as two different characters.

3. If you screw up, figure out an artful way to cover, and cover fast. You should be able to cover the mistake within the time allowed to edit.

4. If you are busted, don't lie about it. Artfully dodge the question instead. Lying is bad form, unless one of your characters is a compulsive liar. Or both, as the case may be.
