Lucent plans DSL push

Compiled by CBS MarketWatch

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Lucent Technologies Inc. is expected
Tuesday to unveil a system that allows phone companies to deploy
multiple forms of "digital subscriber line" technology, which boosts the
capacity of traditional copper telephone lines. According to the Wall
Street Journal, the Lucent (LU: news, msgs) technology could enable a
phone company to serve different segments of the market -- large
corporations, small businesses and consumers -- using one system. Digital
subscriber line, or DSL, allows consumers to surf the Internet at high
speeds using their existing phone lines. Some versions, aimed primarily at
business customers, offer very high speeds. Lower-cost alternatives aimed
at consumers offer speeds of about 256 kilobits a second, or nearly five
times faster than traditional high-speed modems, which operate at 56.6
kilobits a second. Wall Street Journal
