As a society, we need to pick and choose whom we put in prison. Drug offenders and other "lifestyle criminals" should be cleared out so robbers and rapists have enough jail space to serve out their sentences. I do think that violent offenders get the message that jail won't hold them ... and this emboldens them. Punish violent convicts (with sentences determined by current law ... we don't need a buncha new laws, just the old ones wisely judged), not drug users, gun owners and other popular targets. As for 60 Minutes ... I never heard of such a thing. It smells like a "set-up". Geraldo stuff. It happens to the big names as well - remember the ruckus over exploding Ford pickup trucks ten years ago? They were rigged with bombs so they'd burn for the cameras. I'm not saying it can't have happened - but I know a number of gun professionals and not one of them would ever dream of endangering his enterprise or honor doing stuff like that. It is outside my envelope of comfy credulity ... so I smell rat.
