Wow! Things move quickly. A few days ago the UN was swanning around Timor supervising a fairly benign referendum on independence. Today there are heads on stakes and complete murderous turmoil. Habibe is likely to be arrested in Auckland as a war criminal. I suspect he won't even come rather than be faced with that.

The Chinese in Indonesia have been attacked [in the same way Jews were attacked in the 1930s in Germany - being blamed for getting the money or some nonsense].

Jiang will not be looking kindly on Timorese independence, but neither would he enjoy the sight of Chinese being attacked in Indonesia. Talk about a cleft stick for him. Meanwhile, Bill Clinton won't want to hassle Indonesia and the NZ government, contrary to the will of New Zealanders [meaning me but I'm in good company on this one], is doing nothing and talking soothingly about this "unsatisfactory situation". The NZ government is looking like a completely detached bunch of airheads not wanting to spoil a nice party this weekend. Don McKinnon, the foreign minister has zero judgement. The present government is losing votes fast and they face an election in a couple of months! They probably hoped a good show at APEC and the Americas Cup buildup would help them. They must now be cringing.

I think they are going to get a wake up call. Maybe the great APEC sheep riot will be trivial compared with the great APEC East Timor riot.

If the USA supports East Timorese independence and UN action, then China is likely to get their nose in a knot. They don't like these votes for independence!

Sure, Jiang and Bill would like to make nice, but they won't do it at any price. Economics always is secondary to power.

This is a cliffhanger!
