Why the rift?

I've never known the answer to that one. His departure does indeed seem to have been abrupt.

Bear in mind that the Calamari Charlie as Great Satan scenario is of relatively recent origin. Initially Mikey concentrated on Andy Mann. Charlie's name wasn't even mentioned at the September/October hearings. Only when Josh Landish came on board in late October did poor Charlie become the key figure who linked together all the others.

Perhaps Charlie asked for a paycheck. As we know anyone who asks to be paid for their services, seems to become an enemy.
