One good reason for doing it now might be because the velocity data is "critical" to their interpretations and it can only be gathered before the well is cased. So, because their "test" is so very important to them, they will do it NOW rather than risk missing out on an opportunity to run it should they have to run casing to deal with unexpected hole problems in the near future.
